Our Top Tips For Getting Your Vehicle Ready for Winter

Let's face it; we get more than our fair share of winter weather. While that's awesome, because it brings some of our favorite outdoor activities with it, it can also wreak havoc on your car, truck or SUV. It's important to make sure that your ride is ready for what's coming.

  • Wash and wax your exterior, to remove road grime and protect against road salt, snow, and slush.
  • Check your battery, and replace it if it's weak. Summer heat can drain an old battery's life, and a cold morning can finish the job with ease. If you don't drive your car often, you may want to attach the battery to a trickle charger or a maintainer to keep it fully refreshed.
  • Change your oil before the weather turns. Old oil moves slower, which is not ideal in winter temperatures that already reduce viscosity. You might even want to consider making the change to synthetic oil, since it flows freely in cold temperatures and doesn't need to warm up before it begins protecting your engine's moving parts.
  • Check the antifreeze while you're changing the oil. Make sure that it's fresh, the reservoir is filled, and that your antifreeze is rated to protect your engine from freezing at our coldest temperatures.
  • Make sure that your visibility is good, both for you and other drivers. Consider using winter blades to better deal with snow and ice, and check that all of your lights are working. Replace any that are dim or burned out, and clean your lenses.
  • Finally, inspect your tires to verify that you have enough tread. Better still? Consider purchasing a set of winter tires and mounting them on inexpensive steel rims. This way, all you need to do is switch out your tires to suit the seasonal weather. You may find it worthwhile to bring the set of tires to a center that offers professional tire rotation, since they'll do the job in an efficient manner, and keep track of which tires need to go where.
